Spent the Morning in the ER

I can think of a hundred more fun things to do than spend 7 hours in the emergency room.  I avoided it as long as possible…  but that’s where I ended up this morning.  I had kidney stone symptoms (all but nausea & vomiting) and tried to ride it out until the stone passed.  Among my self treatments were drinking lots of water, cranberry Diet Oceanspray. and straining my urine.  (I know the drill… it’s my third one).  And, let’s not forget the trusty Tylenol Rapid Blast!

But then, fear started to creep in.  WHAT IF it was something else, such as a UTI, kidney infection, bladder infection, or worse:  appendicitis.  When the pain gets worse, fear can get the best of you.  So I decided it was time for a medical opinion.  Tim was such a sweetheart and drove me to the ER at 2:00 this morning.  We were there until 9:00.  Diagnosis: polynephritis.  The physician said he could tell that I indeed passed a stone, but the pain was coming from a very bad kidney infection.  As a matter of fact, he said that if I got home with my prescriptions and could not eat or started vomiting, it was back in the hospital.  I haven’t eaten anything all day except for 3 spoonfuls of chicken noodle soup broth.  It took me twenty minutes of dry heaving before finally being able to take that.

I’ve been in bed all day.  If I get up, and walk around, I feel very dizzy to the point of possible vomiting.   I’ve seen better days, that’s for sure!

Saga of a Kidney Stone

Christmas night Tim and I were on our way home from his folks’ house.  I grew very tired, quiet, just did not feel well and had the blahs.  As a matter of fact, I did not say a word all the way home. I was agitated, for lack of a better word.  Then Friday when we were working on the house, I was still a bear.  I did not feel good!  My mother arrived to help with some painting and asked, “In a bad mood are we?”  Uhhhh NO!

As the day went on, my back started to hurt.  I thought perhaps I had a kidney or bladder infection and had been drinking lots of water and Diet Cranberry Ocean Spray for a few days.  Tim took me home and I was almost in tears.  I finally told him my fear:  “This could be a kidney stone.”  I hoped and prayed that I was wrong.  Only time would tell.  Sure enough, bed time came and I was in so much pain that I was almost in tears.  I have been drinking Rapid Blast Tylenol like its going out of style!

We were to have his folks and another couple help us today on the house.  I have so much work to do!  But I did not think it best to get out of the house.  I’ve been taking pain meds all day, sleeping, trying to stay still so that the cramping pain does not radiate throughout my right abdomen, front and back.  If you’ve ever had a kidney stone, you know the throbbing pain!  I’ve never had children, but this will make the third kidney stone I’ve passed.  Just think, I have been through the pain of labor, but don’t have any kids to show for it!

I know why I get kidney stones.  The urologist last year told me that the kind I had is caused from dehydration.  I do not drink enough liquids.  Oh, I try.  But I don’t work at it hard enough.  I had a kidney stone in 1999 (pre wls).  I’ve a history of not drinking enough water or liquids.  Needless to say, I did this to myself…  No ER visit for me, but just drinking as much water as possible and monitoring with pain medication.  If it gets really unmanageable, I’d take a trip to the ER.
